Surprise Proposal Location Planning

Daniel + Holly

If you’re getting ready to propose, this blog is for you! First, congratulations! This is an exciting time and I hope you pack some tissues for your big moment! Secondly, I hope your reading this discreetly! Got to keep this a secret (but i’m glad you’re here!) This surprise proposal location planning list features a few of my favorite spots in all of DC.

  • Tidal Basin: Perfect during the cherry blossom season, but beautiful year-round with its serene water views and iconic monuments. If you plan on proposing here, make sure you plan in advance and obtain a permit!
  • Georgetown Waterfront: A casual yet romantic vibe with views of the Potomac River—plus, you can grab celebratory drinks nearby! Perfect for sunrise views.
  • National Arboretum: For a private, natural setting, the Capitol Columns are a hidden gem and offer a dreamy backdrop.

  • Lincoln Memorial: A classic choice with an epic view of the Reflecting Pool and Washington Monument, especially at sunrise or sunset.

  • Dumbarton Oaks Gardens: A quiet and lush oasis tucked away in Georgetown—great for something intimate and unexpected.

  • Kennedy Center Rooftop: The city skyline at sunset is breathtaking, and it’s less crowded than the monuments.

  • CityCenterDC: If you’re into a more urban vibe, the twinkling lights in the winter or the giant art installations year-round add a modern touch.

Holly and Daniel’s surprise engagement was sentimental and very personal. There is a song by Taylor Swift called “Paper Rings” which simply states: “I love fancy things, but i’d marry you with paper rings.” This line and song meant a lot to them, so much, he proposed with a paper ring.

Whatever ring or spot that you choose, pick one that feels special to you both. This surprise proposal location planning blog is just the beginning. Whenever you’re ready to pop that question, make sure you send me an invite too!
