This Bishop’s Garden surprise engagement took some planning. Planning the perfect proposal always takes some time! Although you may see social media showing you the end results and calling it easy, these moments are carefully crafted. Here are some questions to consider when planning a surprise proposal:

• Location

  Where would be the perfect place for a proposal? Consider a special place like your first date spot or the school where you met. You can even use one of these spots that I commonly recommend for engagements.

• When

  When is the best time to propose? Consider a significant day like an anniversary, Christmas, or a graduation. If you’re in the area for vacation, it could be the perfect disguise for a surprise proposal.

• Who to involve

  Is it important to ask your partner’s parents for permission? Do you want friends or family around for your proposal? The only people you really need are you, your partner and a great photographer!

• Story

  What story will you tell about how you proposed? Make it a good one that you can share with friends and family.

• Plan B

  What is your plan if something doesn’t go as planned? For example, if the weather is bad. Finding an indoor location or a spot with some covering is always a good idea.

• Ring size

  How do you find out your partner’s ring size? You can ask a friend or relative, use a ring size chart, or browse rings together at a jewelry store.

• Photographer

  If you’re hiring a photographer, you can ask questions like:

  • Are you familiar with the location?

  • How will you make the proposal a surprise?

  • Will I receive a preview after the proposal?
