How to Choose the Perfect Wedding Photographer

Selecting the right photographer isn't just a matter of scrolling through an endless list of portfolios, although it can seem that way. It's about finding a visual storyteller whose style resonates with your personal aesthetic and fits the vibes and flow of your wedding day. Whether you’re planning a wedding, engagement session or surprise proposal, your choice of photographer can elevate these moments into lasting memories.

Recently, I asked couples on social media, “what was the deciding factor in choosing your wedding photographer?” With 200 responses, only 5% of voters respectively selected being in budget and being highly recommended. 23% of voters said they picked their photographer because their personalities blended and they would fit in with their friends and family. The biggest chunk of voters (68%) said the photographers style and editing was the most important factor.

Although I wasnt entirely surprised with the results, they reiterate a few things that I always mention to my couples when they inquire about wedding photography. First, there is always space in the budget for things you find to be of importance. We all like to splurge on nice things for ourselves; after all, we all work really hard for the money we make. When we go buy that new car or nice dinner or plan that vacation, if you really want that experience or feeling , most times, you can reasonably expand your budget to accommodate. That appears to be the same case with photography. If you truly desire that photographer or asthetic, people are generally okay with spending a bit more if necessary.

Second, a conclusion I can make from the overwhelming majority of answers is that the photographer’s style and final product supersede all. For couples choosing a photographer, when you can picture yourself in the photographers work and imagine your day as shown by them, its almost a gut instinct telling you that you’ve found your photographer. Maybe that photographer is slightly out of the budget you pre-determined but you really feel their photos speak to you and your vision and thats all you need. That also reiterates to photographers how important it is to define, refine and display your style in photos and behind the camera as well.

Finding the right wedding photographer can be daunting with so much out there to choose from but a here are a few things that can help make that bumpy ride into a smoother one.

Understand Your Style

Do you lean towards candid, documentary-style photos, or are you enamored by classic, posed setups? Maybe you're drawn to artistic or dramatic photography? Knowing your style preference is crucial as it will guide you in selecting a photographer whose portfolio aligns with the vibe you’re aiming for. Browse through social media, wedding blogs, and photography websites to get a clear idea of different styles and what appeals to you most.

Evaluate the Portfolio

A photographer’s portfolio is their visual handshake. It is here that they lay out their vision, technique, and range. As you go through their work, look for consistency in quality, attention to detail, and the ability to capture emotions, which are all indicative of a seasoned professional. Check for variety in their shots, and see if their images tell a story. If their previous projects make you feel something, it’s a good sign they can bring out the essence of your own story.

Personality Match

Never underestimate the importance of a good personality fit. You'll be spending significant time with your photographer, especially in intimate or high-stress situations like weddings. Set up a meeting or a video call to get a sense of their personality and how they approach their craft. You need someone who’s not only skilled with a camera but also personable, patient, and capable of making you feel relaxed in front of the lens. Find a photographer who brings out your partner and your best side.

Budget Considerations

Pricing can vary significantly among photographers, depending on experience, demand, and the scope of the project. Ask for detailed quotes and find out exactly what each package includes. While budget is an important factor, remember that quality often comes at a price. If youre looking for a cheap photographer, you should expect cheap photos. Don’t settle for cheap!

Expertise and Professionalism

Lastly, consider the photographer’s flexibility, professionalism and creativity. Are they open to last-minute changes? How do they handle unexpected challenges? Can they bring an exciting idea to the teable? An experienced photographer not only brings their technical expertise and artistic flair but also a calm, adaptable approach which can be crucial in dynamic event environments.

Choosing the right photographer involves a mix of practical considerations and intuitive judgments. It’s about finding someone who can see the world through your eyes and capture it through theirs. Take your time, do your research, and trust your gut – your special moments deserve nothing less.
