How to Elope in Washington DC: A Simple Guide for Couples
Big weddings are great. But sometimes, keeping things simple is even better.
If you are wondering how to elope in Washington DC, you are in luck. DC makes the process surprisingly easy, and the city gives you some of the best locations the country for photos afterward. Consider places like gardens, the national mall, a museum or the Library of Congress.
Recently, I photographed a couple who said their vows during a courthouse ceremony and then headed to the Library of Congress for portraits. This isn’t a rare practice. It happens more frequently than you see. Although it is a smaller, “untraditional” practice, couples still choose to have it remembered with photography.
If you are thinking about eloping, here is exactly how to do it.
Step 1: Get Your Marriage License
The first step in how to elope in Washington DC is getting your marriage license.
Couples can apply through the Marriage Bureau at the DC Superior Court. One of the best things about DC is that there is no waiting period. In many cases, you can apply and get married quickly.
Washington DC also allows self officiated marriages, which means you do not need an officiant if you do not want one. It is one of the reasons DC has become such a popular destination for elopements especially for people from out of town or the country.
Step 2: Choose Your Ceremony Location
One option is a simple courthouse ceremony. It is fast, easy and there are people who can help with each step, for free.
Afterward, many couples explore the city for portraits. Some favorite spots include:
- The Library of Congress
- The National Mall
- The National Portrait Gallery / National Gallery of Art
- The Thomas Jefferson Memorial
- Washington National Cathedral
Step 3: Plan Time for Photos
One mistake couples make when planning an elopement is rushing through the day.
Even if your ceremony only lasts a few minutes, set aside time to celebrate together afterward. Walk through the city, grab coffee, visit a meaningful location, or simply enjoy being newly married.
That is exactly what made this courthouse and Library of Congress elopement so memorable. The day felt relaxed and centered around them. They even brought their dog along!
Why Couples Love Eloping in Washington DC
There are plenty of reasons couples search for how to elope in Washington DC:
- Less stress
- Lower costs
- More flexibility
- Beautiful photo locations
- Freedom to get married anywhere
And that is what an elopement is all about.
Whether you choose a courthouse ceremony or exchange vows in one of DC’s iconic locations, your wedding day does not need hundreds of guests to feel meaningful.
It just needs the two of you.
