Old Springhouse Reitano Vineyards Wedding

Antoine + Sherelle

Antoine and Sherelle got engaged earlier this summer at the wharf district in Washington, DC and they knew they didn’t want to wait long to tie the knot. A few months later, they planned a wedding and said their vows at the brand new event center the Old Springhouse at Reitano Vineyards in Front Royal, Virginia.

Planning a wedding and creating a timeline from the engagement and saying your β€œI do’s” is a personal and exciting process. Certain couples opt for a shorter engagement period, choosing to tie the knot promptly.

It’s easy to feel the pressure to dive right into wedding planning, but creating a meaningful engagement timeline is about more than just setting a date. It’s about pacing your journey in a way that works for you as a couple. Here’s a few tips how to plan an engagement timeline that balances excitement with intention, allowing you to enjoy every step along the way.

1. Start with Your Vision as a Couple

Before you get bogged down in the details, take a step back and talk about your shared vision for the engagement. Do you want a short engagement with a wedding in just a few months, or are you both more comfortable with a longer timeline? Consider your personalities, preferences, and current life circumstances. Some couples thrive on quick decision-making, while others need time to save money or navigate busy careers.

No matter what, this is about your journey. You don’t have to follow anyone else’s timeline.

2. Determine Your Wedding Season (Not Just a Date)

The first big step in crafting your timeline is deciding when you want to get married. Instead of feeling pressured to set an exact date right away, start by thinking about the season or time of year that speaks to you. Do you envision a spring garden wedding, a cozy fall celebration, or maybe a sunny summer beach event? The season can affect everything from venue availability to decor choices, so choosing your preferred time frame will naturally guide the rest of your planning.

Once you have a general season in mind, you can narrow down potential dates without rushing.

3. Set Key Milestones for Your Engagement

Instead of focusing solely on the wedding date, set key milestones for your engagement. This helps break down the journey into manageable steps and gives you something to celebrate along the way. Consider milestones like:

  • Deciding on the guest list

  • Booking your venue

  • Sending out save-the-dates

  • Choosing your wedding party

4. Plan Your Engagement in Phases

Breaking your engagement timeline into phases can keep you organized and on track. Here’s a sample breakdown:

  • Engagement Celebrationn (0-3 months)
Savor the excitement, celebrate with loved ones. Enjoy being engaged and having an upgrade in relationship status. You deserve it.

  • Vision and Budget (4-6 months)
Start discussing your wedding vision and set a very fluid budget. Research potential venues and vendors. This is also a good time to talk about the type of ceremony and celebration you want.

  • Planning Mode (6-9 months)
Start booking major vendors, like your venue, photographer, and caterer. Create your guest list and send out save-the-dates. This phase is where you’ll make most of your logistical decisions like hotel blocks and wedding colors.

  • Fine-Tuning (10-12 months)
As the wedding gets closer, you’ll focus on details like invitations, decor, food, dress sizing, etc.. Don’t forget to plan fun pre-wedding events like the bridal shower or bachelor/bachelorette parties.

  • Countdown to "I Do" (Final 2-3 months)
With most of your major decisions behind you, this phase is all about tying up loose ends and preparing for the big day. This is also a great time to focus on self-care and reflection as you approach the wedding day.

Whenever you get to wedding day, remember to take time for yourselves to appreciate all the hard work and love that lead you to your big day. Everyone is there to celebrate you! Embrace the love and live in the moment! Congratulations and cheers again to Antoine and Sherelle!
