From golden-hour portraits to a dance floor that did not quit—Ben and Susannah’s River Farm Virginia wedding was a masterpiece. While the majority of people were having the “Sunday scaries”, Ben and Susannah were getting ready to kick off an amazing week and an epic Monday to keep the weekend going.
A Sunday evening wedding might sound odd but it shouldn’t be. In fact, if you’re wedding planning, you really need to consider Sunday as your wedding day.
Why You Should Totally Have a Sunday Wedding
The under-appreciated, underdog of wedding days: Sunday. While everyone’s fighting over Saturdays like it’s Black Friday at a bridal expo, Sunday’s over here, chillin’, waiting to change your week and even your life. And truthfully? It might just be the best-kept secret in wedding planning.
Reason no.1 (and maybe the only reason you might need): Money, baby.
Venues often offer lower rates for off season dates (like the winter) and Sundays. That dream space you thought was out of reach on a Saturday? Probably a lot more doable if you slide into their Sunday calendar. More budget to play with = open bar, better food, or that wedding photographer you’ve been stalking on Instagram who you thought was “out of your budget”. Save a couple hundred here to spend a couple hundred there and boom, you get everything you want.
Endless energy!
Sundays bring a slower, more intentional energy. Guests aren’t rushing in from a long work week—they’re rolling in relaxed, with weekend energy still in the air. Plus, you get to utilize the entire day. Sunday is still technically part of the weekend but typically it’s used as a day to get ready for the week, It doesn’t feel like a real “day off”. You get to use every bit of Sunday and feel like you had a whole weekend.
Plus, you get the whole weekend.
Use Saturday for a welcome dinner, pool hang, or chill family brunch. If you have people coming from out of town, it gives them more time to be with you or enjoy the surroundings. By the time the wedding rolls around on Sunday, everyone’s already bonded—and that makes for a way better party. Wedding days are awesome but a wedding weekend?? Legendary.
And let’s be honest—your people will show up.
If they love you, they’ll take Monday off (or at least roll into work a little tired and full of cake). Send out your save the dates and invite early so guests have time to take the following Monday off. Give them a reason to stick around before and after. Make this celebration an event people wont want to miss. Your wedding doesn’t need to follow the rules. It just needs to feel like you.
So yeah—don’t sleep on Sundays. They might just be your secret weapon. Just ask Ben and Susannah and their guests. Sunshine, cake, sunset portraits and singing on the dance floor with your friends, these moments were incredible. It was such a pleasure to be their photographer.
