Stone Tower Winery Surprise Wedding Proposal
Caitlyn and Callen had an emotional and colorful surprise proposal at the Stone Tower Winery in Virginia. The forecast had zero chance of rain as we planned all week but on the day of the proposal, that quickly changed. The ironic thing about cloudy forecasts is that it often can produce some of the most beautiful light for photographs. If you time your proposal just right, you can capture photos that are full of life, love and color between the grey clouds and silver lining. Perfect timing is something weather and surprise proposals have very closely in common.
This was a proposal where having a solid plan and communication throughout the day made a difference. Using a few tips and recommendations, we were able to create moments and memories that would be everlasting. Here are a few surprise proposal tips for you when you’re ready to pop the question.
1. Find the perfect spot and light.
This make take some collaboration with your photographer or even scouting the area yourself, but you’ll want to know exactly where you want to propose before it happens. Elect someplace that is beautiful and scenic yet can provide a beautiful view if possible. Consider the time of day to avoid harsh lighting but also avoid something too late in the evening so you’re not in darkness.
2. Communicate with your photographer
Don’t show up to your proposal blind or on radio silence. Find a way to be in commutation with your photographer leading up to the proposal. You can enlist the help of friends or family to help as decoys or help cool your nerves and take some pressure off you with planning and execution.
3. Do everything twice as slow as you normally would.
Proposing is such a big moment and should be savored and enjoyed. Be present and conscious to really slow down and allow every second to breathe. You’d be surprised how many people get down, propose, get back up and its over in an instant. Do everything in slow motion, from grabbing their hand, to saying your thoughtfully prepared mini speech and finally getting on a knee and bringing out the ring.
4. FORGET THE OLD RULES!
This isnt a tip for when youre actually proposing but for when you’re still planning. The old rule of buying an engagement ring was it should cost three months of your yearly income. The average income for people in the Maryland, Virginia and DC area is roughly $62000/yr which equates to roughly $3000/month, so your engagement ring “should cost” $9000 and that’s not reasonable expense for most couples. A ring doesnt have to be new to be special, nor does it make the moment less memorable. There are other beautiful options out there for engagement rings such as gemstones or passing down and re-setting a ring from your mother or grandmother. Do what fits you as a couple.
